Connect ChatGPT

Coming soon / experimental. ChatGPT support for custom MCP connectors is in beta and its requirements are still changing (verified 2026-06-25). The steps below may not work for your account or region. If you hit problems, use a fully supported client — Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code — in the meantime.

Before you start

You need a Trace account on the Starter plan or higher. Connecting uses OAuth — you’ll sign in to Trace in your browser; there’s no API key to paste. Your Trace email must be verified, and some tools require the Pro plan. See Authentication for the full access model.

Availability caveats

• Plan. Full custom connectors are available on ChatGPT Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu — not on Free or Plus.
• Region. Custom MCP connectors are not available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the UK.
• Transport. ChatGPT’s connector transport support is evolving. OpenAI’s docs reference SSE; the Trace server speaks Streamable HTTP. Verify the connection works before relying on it.

Steps (beta)

1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors.

2. Enable Developer mode.

3. Add a custom MCP server with the URL:

   https://mcp.tracedata.ai/mcp

4. Complete the OAuth sign-in in your browser — log in to Trace and approve access.

Note

Connecting uses the standard MCP OAuth discovery flow. The client calls the Trace server, gets a 401 pointing at the OAuth metadata, registers itself automatically (Dynamic Client Registration), and then runs the browser sign-in. You don’t configure any of this by hand.
